EVENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS/HAPPENINGS April 1, 1999IQALUIT, NUNAVUT - Today the new northern territory of Nunavut joins the Canadian federation, changing the map of Canada for the first time in 50 years. In an inaugural ceremony in the new territorial capital of Iqaluit, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Jane Stewart, and Inuit and northern leaders joined His Excellency Governor General Roméo LeBlanc in welcoming the new territory. March 10, 1999-TORONTO, ONTARIO Seventy-four First Nations have received additional funding to accelerate housing activities thanks to an additional $20 million in funding made available by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) for housing on-reserve across Canada. The additional $20 million brings to approximately $200 million the total DIAND investment in on-reserve housing for the current fiscal year. The Innovative Housing Fund, announced earlier this year, allows First Nations to develop innovative housing ideas such as new house building techniques and alternative house designs and energy sources to accommodate the diverse housing needs within their communities. DIAND developed the Innovative Housing Fund in collaboration with First Nations organizations including the Assembly of First Nations.
